About Squeakie

Squeakie is a beautiful white with black markings with extremely soft short thick fur. Squeakie loves to play in the gardens, and especially she loves to laze around in the long grass in the shade. She eats mainly biscuits and when she is hungry she rubs her body around my legs until she is fed, she is a very soft and gentle cat. Squeakie loves the cool evenings after the hot sunny days to relax and snooze on the warm concrete paths. During the summertime she likes to sleep outside under the stars.

Teacher Notes

Preschool and Year One and Two

Squeakie and Bree’s Secret Gardening Adventure is a useful discussion tool: a) To introduce children to some types of vegetables that can be grown to bring food to the table. b) To reinforce the children’s understanding that it is important to ask for permission first before taking something from somebody’s garden.

Option a) – Show the front cover to the children. Ask what kind of garden is it, who has a vegetable garden at home, what is grown in the garden and make a list of vegetables that could be grown on a white board. Ask the children to look for different vegetables as you read the story. Add these to the list. Some discussion could take place re strawberries and carrots and the difference between fruit and vegetables. Follow up: Write a group story taking information from the children as to what kinds of vegetables they would like to grow in their garden. If appropriate with school gardening programmes develop your own garden, introducing some of the seeds and seedlings of plants discussed.

Option b) discuss the meaning of the word ‘stealing’ and ask the children why Squeakie gets cross with Bree. Children can act out a short play – Bree deciding to help himself wthout asking, digging in the garden and getting into trouble with Gail.
