Squeak Goes on a Mystery Adventure
About the Book
When three little kittens came to stay at the Rescued Cats Centre, they were favourites with everyone. Squeak was the cutest kitten of all but she had one really bad habit. Squeak just wouldn’t listen.
Squeak’s story provides opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss two concepts with children – losing a pet and the importance of listening.

About the Book
Squeak is a lovely looking kitten and is well loved. His one failing point is that he does not listen and this leads ultimately leads to him going missing.
This book is a useful tool to lead discussion into three areas
- The importance of listening
- What to do when a pet goes missing
- Coping with the loss of a pet
Teacher Notes
Preschool / Year One and Two
Show the front cover to the children and discuss the meaning of the word ‘mystery’ and what a ‘mystery adventure’ might be.
If the teacher is focussing on item 1) above, read the synopsis on the back cover and ask the children why they think it is important to listen. Write key words on the white board and reiterate these. Ask the children what they think might happen to the little kitten who wouldn’t listen. Commence reading. Follow-up the children can draw the lost kitten, Squeak, showing what they imagine happened to her.
If the teacher is focussing on option 2) and 3) above, after discussing the meaning of ‘mystery’ promote open discussion about pets and the children’s own experiences. This discussion can include types of pets, what they like about their pets, the care of their pets, problems with their pets, losing a pet, how to try to find a lost pet and coping when a pet is lost, (gone missing, or has died). Follow-up- classroom visit by a local vet, a school pet day.
