Teacher Notes
Preschool
Many pre-schoolers will have experience of pets in the home.
Prior to reading the book to the children, ask those who have cats in the home, or at friends’ and neighbours’ homes to describe a cat they know – the colour, the shape, the whiskers, the paws etc. Lead discussion into what cats do – stalking, sleeping, jumping on laps and then introduce the cover of the book, both front and back. Children can be encouraged to mime being a cat – for example, stretching, sitting and licking paws.
Year One
The book may be read to the class or individual as above.
Children with the ability to recognise some basic words may be encouraged to read on their own. Suggested related art activity – use cardboard stencils of silhouettes of cats in different positions. Depending on age and ability level, children can trace around these onto black paper, cut out with assistance and glue onto a coloured background to form a class montage.
