About Mouse
Mouse is a gentle grey and white cat with soft silky fur and follows her ‘maid’, Chrissy, everywhere she goes. Her favourite past time is finding a wide assortment of objects, in particular fallen brown leaves, which she deposits around the house or at the front door, for Chrissy to pick up.
Mouse has a very affectionate nature and loves to be patted and groomed.
About the Book
My name is Mouse and I am ‘number one’ treasure hunter of the cats at the Rescued Cats Centre. Every day, I find new treasures for my ‘maid’, Chrissy. I am sure she loves the gifts I bring her. Teacher Notes
Preschool
Many preschoolers will have experience of pets in the home.
Prior to reading the book to the children, show the front cover and explain to the children that this a book about a cat called Mouse. Why do they think he was called Mouse? Discuss rhyming words cat and mat, mouse and house, and box and socks. Discuss the meaning of treasure. After reading the story the children can brainstorm the treasures Mouse brought into the house and add some treasures of their own. A list can be written on the whiteboard.
Year One and Two
This book may be read to the class or individual as above.
Suggested follow-up activity: The children may be encouraged to act out Mouse bringing treasures into Chrissy. Discuss emotions:
- How Mouse feels when she brings in the treasure
- How Chrissy feels when Mouse, the cat, brings inside a real mouse
- How Mouse feels when she is put outside.
