About KC Cat and KC Cat’s Dad

KC Cat is a black cat with distinctive white markings. Born a feral kitten, he arrived unannounced on the back steps of the Rescued Cats Centre and was dubbed Kitty Cat (KC Cat).

During that time, a black adult cat with similar markings was seen visiting the kitten as if to check on him. Richard and Chrissy who ran the Centre came to the conclusion after some years that this must be KC’s dad.

Eventually KC Cat’s dad also moved into the centre and became the dominant cat, always first to the bowl at eating time. Despite this he remained a very small cat whilst his son grew into a large healthy adult cat.

Teacher Notes

Preschool / Year One and Two

Today, families come in many diverse forms and this book is a useful tool which may allow children to express and explore their own family and touches on such matters as adoption (KC Cat’s adoption by the Rescued Cats’ Centre); merged or mixed families (Sophie the dog is a miniature poodle and the pups are mixed breeds); solo parent families (KC Cat and KC Cat’s Dad). It also raises the idea of a family being a place where you feel safe.

The book also introduces the subject of ‘stranger danger’. When KC Cat meets his father for the first time he doesn’t know who he is. He acts correctly by going inside to tell someone he trusts that he has seen a stranger (a feral cat, KC Cat’s Dad). Even though he doesn’t like the answer he receives, he stays inside until the danger has gone.

Before reading the story, show the front cover and read the title of the book. Encourage the children to discuss the meaning of the word “family” and “adoption”. Following story discuss how KC Cat’s family was made up and encourage the children to talk about their own families- how the family is made up (number of siblings etc, nationality of parents, extended family (grandparents, aunts and uncles). Follow up art lesson – making family members using wooden pegs and collage, or drawing and cutting out family members and pasting on sheets to form a class mural.
